A primary election determines which candidates advance to the November general election. Voters in each party select their nominee, and the winners face each other in the fall.
Oregon holds an closed primary — only voters registered with a party may vote in that party's primary.

Jeff Merkley has represented Oregon in the U.S. Senate since 2009. He is the only senator who served as a state House Speaker before being elected to the Senate. A progressive voice in the Democratic caucus, he has been a consistent advocate for workers' rights, climate action, and campaign finance reform.
