Tuesday, June 2, 2026 · 11 days away
U.S. House, U.S. Senate, Governor, statewide offices
What’s being decided
A primary election determines which candidates advance to the November general election. Voters in each party select their nominee, and the winners face each other in the fall.
Iowa holds an semi-closed primary — registered party members and unaffiliated voters may participate.
Candidates
U.S. Senate
Republican · Incumbent since 2015
Joni Ernst has represented Iowa in the U.S. Senate since 2015. She is a combat veteran who served in the Iowa Army National Guard and a former farmer, and she chairs the Senate Republican Policy Committee.
Republican · Incumbent since 1981
Chuck Grassley has represented Iowa in the U.S. Senate since 1981, making him the longest-currently-serving senator. He will be 93 years old on election day 2026. His longevity has prompted public discussion about age and fitness for office, and he has not yet confirmed whether he will seek an eighth full term. He previously served in the U.S. House and Iowa state legislature. As President Pro Tempore of the Senate and senior member of the Judiciary Committee, he remains a significant figure in the institution.
